Plans change. Weather changes too. This page explains how cancellations, rescheduling, refunds, and bonds work for Tide boat hire bookings.

This is our customer-friendly version of the cancellation terms in our Boat Hire Terms. For boat detailing, cancellation and rescheduling are covered in our Detailing Service Terms.

Quick summary

  • Cancel 48+ hours before your booking: no cancellation charge.
  • Cancel within 48 hours: you may lose the booking deposit or booking fee if one was clearly disclosed when you booked.
  • Need to reschedule? Contact us as early as possible. Rescheduling is subject to availability.
  • Unsafe weather: safety comes first. If we decide conditions are unsafe before departure, we will help you reschedule or refund the hire amount.
  • No-show or too late to proceed: this may be treated as a no-show, and no refund may be provided.
  • Security bond: your bond is separate from your booking fee or hire fee. It is refunded unless there is a valid deduction, such as damage, missing equipment, fuel shortfall, cleaning, late return, or other costs under the Boat Hire Terms.

If you need to cancel

Please contact Tide as soon as possible if you need to cancel or change your booking.

If you cancel 48 hours or more before your booking time, we will cancel the booking without a cancellation charge. You can also ask to reschedule, subject to availability.

If you cancel within 48 hours of your booking time, and the cancellation is not because of unsafe weather or something on Tide's side, we may retain the booking deposit or booking fee that was disclosed when you booked.

We will not add a cancellation fee after the fact if it was not clearly disclosed before payment.

If you need to reschedule

We will do our best to help you reschedule.

If you ask to reschedule 48 hours or more before your booking, we will generally allow one reschedule without a rescheduling charge.

If you ask to reschedule within 48 hours, we may treat it as a cancellation unless we agree otherwise.

Weather and safety

Boating depends on the conditions. If Tide decides the weather, marine warnings, wind, sea state, visibility, access, or local conditions are unsafe before departure, we may cancel, delay, relocate, shorten, or reschedule the booking.

If we cancel before departure because conditions are unsafe, we will offer a reasonable rescheduling option. If rescheduling is not suitable, we will refund the hire amount paid for that booking.

If you want to cancel because of weather but Tide reasonably considers the conditions safe for the booking, the normal customer cancellation rules may apply.

If conditions change during the hire

If weather or conditions become unsafe during your hire, contact Tide as soon as possible.

If Tide tells you to return early or stop operating for safety reasons, you must follow those instructions.

If we require an early return for safety reasons outside your control, we may offer a fair partial refund, credit, or rescheduling option depending on the circumstances.

We are not required to provide a refund if the hire is shortened because of late arrival, breach of the Boat Hire Terms, operation outside approved conditions, or failure to follow instructions.

No-shows and late arrivals

If you do not attend your booking, it will be treated as a no-show.

If you arrive so late that the hire cannot safely or reasonably go ahead, we may also treat it as a no-show.

For no-shows or late arrivals that stop the hire from proceeding, Tide may retain the hire fee, booking deposit, or booking fee, where this was disclosed before booking and is permitted by law.

If you arrive late and the hire still goes ahead, the original return time still applies unless Tide agrees otherwise.

If Tide needs to cancel

Tide may need to cancel, delay, relocate, shorten, or reschedule a booking because of vessel availability, mechanical issues, maintenance, staffing, emergencies, ramp or waterway closures, marine warnings, or other safety or operational reasons.

If Tide cancels before departure for a reason not caused by you, we will offer a reasonable rescheduling option or refund the hire amount paid for that booking.

Safety, conduct, and breach

Tide may refuse, cancel, end, or terminate a booking without refund if we reasonably believe there is a safety, conduct, legal, payment, licence, identification, or breach issue.

This includes situations where a hirer or passenger is intoxicated, abusive, unsafe, unwilling to follow instructions, operating outside approved boundaries, or allowing an unapproved or unlicensed person to operate the boat where approval or a licence is required.

Refund timing

Where a refund is payable, Tide will aim to process it within 5 business days after the refund decision is made and we have the information needed to process it.

Bank and payment-provider processing times may vary.

Security bond

The security bond is separate from cancellation refunds.

If the hire does not proceed and the boat, trailer, and equipment were not released to you, the security bond will be refunded unless there is a valid deduction reason.

If the boat, trailer, or equipment was released to you, Tide may deduct valid amounts from the bond, such as damage, missing equipment, fuel shortfall, late return, recovery costs, cleaning, fines, or other costs under the Boat Hire Terms or Boat Hire Agreement.

If we propose a bond deduction, we will provide a reasonable explanation and, where available, supporting evidence.

Questions or disputes

If you disagree with a cancellation decision, refund amount, bond deduction, or additional charge, please contact Tide promptly so we can review it.
